What makes a video look great?

Production value is a term used to describe the quality of the visuals, audio and story-telling in video.

Video production by definition has many moving parts.  Which parts are the most important and how do they increase the production value?

  1. Story:  At the most basic level, are you effectively taking the viewer through the story and creating the desired result?  Inspiration, education, sadness, joy, mystery are just a few of the possible results from storytelling.

  2. Quality Imagery:  A huge component of production quality is how visuals appear on screen.  Some of the most important aspects include lighting, talent, camera movement, multiple camera angles, scene/location and the footage is edited together.

  3. Quality audio:  The unsung hero….  Quality audio should support the visuals and move the story forward.  Dialogue, voice-over, sound effects and music go a long way to making the video cohesive.

“But we don’t have a Hollywood budget…”  Understanding the different areas of production value helps prioritize where to invest for your desired results.  Working with clients of different sizes and budgets has provided us with the needed experience to use your budget wisely.

The art of using the right tool at the right time to help communicate the story is what creates good production value.  Production is the magic of bringing it all together!
