In this blog, I’ll be covering several ways to promote your business, educate, create new customers and build a community around your brand on YouTube.

How do I use it to help people find my business?

Start by asking yourself what your potential customers might be thinking about and how you could answer their questions.  What are the exact questions that they might be typing into google?  How could you answer these using a helpful video?  This will help you create new connections and provide value.  Getting your Youtube channel found via Google search is a lot easier than trying to get your website ranking to the top. A great way to create consistent content is by launching your business podcast on YouTube.

How do I build a community around my brand?

Get your viewers involved.  Encourage feedback and interactivity.  Help them feel like they are part of your journey.  Provide exclusives and rewards for their valuable interactions.  Video is a powerful way to connect with people with authenticity.  Face to face interactions are king, but video is a close second and it is scalable.  Learn your community, interact, respect their perspective and listen to what they want!  Cultivating a community takes time, but it’s the key to lasting success.

How do I establish myself as an expert in my field?

You have a ton of great knowledge stored up in that brain of yours, share it!  Don’t be a hidden gem.  Use this as an opportunity to go deep on a topic.  Consider taking one big topic and breaking it down into subtopics.  Explore the details and don’t be afraid to revisit topics that your audience expresses interest in.  Being a subject matter expert is the first step into building trust with your audience.  Viewers have come to expect long form content on YouTube, despite the accusation of shrinking attention spans amongst our smartphone culture.  

How do I convert my YouTube effort into real results?

The key to capturing the attention of your audience is to provide value!  People will only trade their time and attention for something they find valuable.  Luckily value can be delivered in different ways, so there’s many paths to accomplish this depending on your business.  Here’s a few ideas…

  • Educate.  Provide useful information.  Don’t just talk about your product or service compared to your competitors.  Talk about things that are adjacent to your business.  For example if you sell gardening supplies, then consider talking about landscaping design or tips for saving irrigation water. Think of ways to spark their curiosity and they will be more likely to subscribe to your channel.

  • Entertain.  Maybe you have a hilarious personality or you’re very friendly.  Play into your strengths and let people see the real you!  Being authentic is the best way to create new connections.  Show people what excites you and why you love what you do.

  • Inspire.  Share your wins and struggles!  Let people join along on your adventure by sharing your personal experience. Optimistic people tend to be better at inspiring others, if this sounds like you then this could be a great fit. 

Youtube has gone through quite the transformation as the internet has grown into maturity.  Thankfully, it’s not just a repository for cat videos anymore!  It’s good practice to try and keep up with the latest best practices so you can optimize your presence on YouTube and ensure that your content is getting seen.  In conclusion, make sure that you listen to your audience and consider their feedback.  Be sure to always provide value with your content to keep viewers engaged and coming back for more.
